The DP ID is a unique identifier that the depositories, such as NSDL  or CDSL, assign to DPs such as brokers, banks and other financial service providers.

This ID in the investment spectrum serves a crucial purpose, as with it, you can identify registered brokers, banks, etc, and reliably invest through their Demat accounts. Also, being a unique ID, you can distinguish one DP from another in the Demat ecosystem.

As of FY26, there are 21 crore Demat accounts in India, and as an investor, you must learn what it means in detail, how to find it and more to securely and reliably invest through DP’s platforms.

What is the Meaning of DP ID and Its Full Form?

The meaning of this ID is the identification number that your brokers get as they register with depositories such as the National Securities Depository Limited, associated with the National Security Exchange or the NSE or the CDSL, i.e. Central Depository Services Ltd, for the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The full form of this ID is Depository Participant Identification. It is an 8-digit-long numeric code or alpha-numeric code that comes embedded with a 16-digit-long Demat account number. Thus, in a Demat account, you can identify this ID by locating the first 8 numeric or alphanumeric characters.

However, you must note that it differs between brokers or DPs depending on whether they are registered with NSDL or CDSL. For brokers or DPs registered with the NSDL, it is an alphanumeric 8-digit code where the first two characters are IN, and the remaining 6 digits constitute a Depository Participant ID.

On the other hand, brokers registered with the CDSL have this ID as an 8-digit number. There is no word involved, as you can see in NSDL-registered DPs.

What Is a Depository Participant (DP)?

While you learn the DP ID meaning, you must also bear in mind the concept of a DP while you create a Demat account and do other investment activities. DPs are simply financial institutions, banks or brokers such as the PL Capital PL Capital Group – Prabhudas Lilladher. You can think of them as an intermediary between you and the depositories.

By being registered with NSDL or CDSL, they provide a reliable dematerialisation service. They include storing the bought securities, such as stocks, ETFs, mutual funds and more, digitally in a Demat account. Your DP also updates the record of securities once you sell or transfer securities and includes other services.

To protect investors’ interests, all registered DPs follow the norms set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Thus, DPs play one of the most crucial roles in terms of investment. With a DP, you can open a Demat account, while most DPs provide a Demat and a trading account together.

In some cases, they create a 3-in-1 account containing a Demat, a trading account, and a bank account. The aim here is to securely store your securities in the same place while trading or investing in the market to make your investment journey seamless.

Example of DP ID in a Demat Account

Since you have seen that a Depository Participant ID comes with a Demat account number or BO ID, and it differs depending on the depositories, you must learn how to distinguish these IDs. For this, an example can be effective to understand the differences with clarity:

For example, let us take a hypothetical Demat account number, i.e. 16-digit long for CDSL-registered DPs such as 5874145201236598. Here, the first 8 digits, that is 58741452, are the ID of your DP with whom you have created your Demat account. The rest of the digits are your client ID.

Now, taking another Demat account number, i.e. IN54741489785201, for NSDL-registered DPs. Here, the first 8-character-long alphanumeric code IN547414 is your DP’s ID. Here, ‘IN’ refers to India, and combined with the following 6 digits constitutes this ID. The remaining 8 digits, i.e. 89785201, are your client ID.
