Crude oil at a two-month low, renewed foreign investor buying and improving global sentiment lifted the market, putting both indices on course for their longest winning streak in a year. The Sensex is BSE’s benchmark index of 30 large companies. It traded at 79,133.46, up 1,832.06 points, or 2.37%, from the previous close of 77,301.40. The index opened at 78,910.94 and touched a high of 79,148.96.
The Nifty 50 traded at 24,486.95, up 526.35 points, or 2.20%, from the previous close of 23,960.60.
Both indices have gained nearly 8% in six sessions. Their year-to-date losses have narrowed to 6.5% for the Nifty and 7.4% for the Sensex.
Why Did the Market Rise Today? Three Key Factors
Three factors drove the rally. Crude oil fell to a two-month low, foreign investors bought heavily for a fourth straight session, and global sentiment improved after the US midterm results and a sharp rally on Wall Street.
- Crude oil fell to a two-month low
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures traded 0.18% lower at $87.96 a barrel. Brent crude edged up 0.41% to $95.007 but is down 5.48% over the past month. Both benchmarks fell more than 8% in the previous session to their lowest levels since 31 August. Crude prices have fallen nearly 16% so far this week.
India depends heavily on oil imports. Lower crude prices can ease the import bill, reduce inflation and improve the outlook for company earnings.
- Foreign investors extended their buying
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth ₹7,284 crore, extending their buying streak to four sessions. This was one of their biggest single-day purchases in India since October 2025.
- Global sentiment improved
Voters handed control of the United States (US) Congress to the opposition Democratic Party. This raised expectations that President Donald Trump’s ability to escalate the conflict with Iran could weaken, lifting hopes of a diplomatic resolution.
US markets ended sharply higher on Wednesday. In Asia, the Shanghai SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also traded higher.
