Stock Market Holidays in October 2026: Is NSE and BSE Closed?

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed for 11 days in October 2026. These include two trading holidays, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on Friday, 2 October, and Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October, along with five Saturdays and four Sundays. Trading will resume on Monday, 5 October, after the Gandhi Jayanti long weekend.

A stock market holiday is a weekday on which the exchanges suspend trading. In October 2026, the NSE and BSE will observe two such holidays, according to the exchanges’ calendars. The first, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October, is a national holiday that marks the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. 

What Are the Stock Market Holidays in October 2026? 

The exchanges will suspend trading in the equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments on the days listed below. Because Gandhi Jayanti falls on a Friday, the market will stay shut from 2 to 4 October. Dussehra on 20 October is the second and last trading holiday of the month.

Will MCX Be Open on 2 October and 20 October? 

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain fully closed on Friday, 2 October, for Gandhi Jayanti. On Tuesday, 20 October, it will observe a partial holiday for Dussehra. Its morning session, which runs from 9 am to 5 pm, will stay shut, and trading will resume in the evening session from 5 pm to 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm. 

What Are the Stock Market Timings in India? 

Trading in the equity segment takes place on all days except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays that the exchanges declare in advance. The regular session runs from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. The day ends with a closing auction session, a separate window for placing and matching orders, followed by the closing session.

The NSE and BSE holiday calendar lists 16 trading holidays in 2026, and Gandhi Jayanti is the 12th. After the two October holidays, three remain this year.
