What Do Index Changes Mean For Passive Fund Flows?

Passive funds that track the MSCI India Index are required to mirror its composition. When a stock is added, these funds typically need to buy shares to match its new weight in the benchmark. When a stock is removed, funds holding it to track the index typically need to sell. These trades tend to concentrate around the effective date of the change, which for this review is 1 September 2026.

Specific passive-flow estimates for the individual stocks affected by this review were not independently available from PL Capital at the time of writing. Share price movement for the affected stocks on the day is also not covered here.

How Do The Changes Take Effect And What Comes Next?

The MSCI India Index tracks the large- and mid-cap segments of the Indian equity market and covers close to 85% of the country’s listed equity universe.

MSCI’s next regular index review is scheduled to be announced on 11 November 2026, with any changes taking effect from 1 December 2026.
