Defence stocks traded higher on Monday after the Defence Acquisition Council granted Acceptance of Necessity for capital acquisition proposals worth around ₹52,000 crore, lifting sentiment across the sector.
What Did The DAC Approve?
The approvals cover a range of indigenous weapon systems and platforms. These include the Akash Tarang anti-drone electronic warfare system, man-portable anti-tank guided missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missile systems, very short-range air defence systems, active protection systems for tanks and jet-powered loitering munitions. For the Indian Navy, the council also cleared proposals for multi-influence ground mines and naval shipborne unmanned aerial systems.
An Acceptance of Necessity is the government’s in-principle approval for a defence procurement proposal. It marks the first stage of the acquisition process and is not a purchase order. Contracts are awarded only after tendering, technical evaluation and commercial negotiations are completed.
How Did Defence Stocks React?
Paras Defence and Space Technologies rose 4.71% to ₹1,355.00. Bharat Electronics gained 1.64% to ₹424.90. Bharat Heavy Electricals rose 1.12% to ₹387.90. Hindustan Aeronautics traded up 0.33% at ₹4,443.60. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders gained 0.86% to ₹2,565.60.
What Is The Approval Timeline?
The Defence Acquisition Council is the highest decision-making body for defence procurements in the country. The timeline for approved defence procurements typically runs five to eight years from approval to delivery, with firm orders potentially taking up to a year to convert.
