Share Market Holiday List 2026

India’s stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), publish their holiday calendar every December, and it rarely changes after that. In 2026, the exchanges have 16 weekday holidays, on top of every Saturday and Sunday. Four more holidays fall on a weekend, so you don’t lose an extra trading day.

Trading holidays push every date that follows them. For example, an F&O expiry moves to the next trading day. A settlement lands a day later. A SIP instalment processes at the next day’s NAV. Check the list below before you plan around a deadline.

Equity and equity derivatives on both exchanges shut for the full day on each date below. Commodity derivatives work differently. On most of these dates only the MCX morning session closes, and the evening session opens as usual, running from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM or 11:55 PM depending on daylight saving.

Share market holidays falling on weekends (2026)

Four of the 2026 stock market holidays land on a Saturday or Sunday. The market is already closed on these days, so they don’t cost an extra trading day. They’re listed below:

Holiday Date Day
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti February 19, 2026 Thursday
Gudhi Padwa March 19, 2026 Thursday
Annual Bank Closing April 01, 2026 Wednesday
Id-E-Milad August 26, 2026 Wednesday

Muhurat Trading.  Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on Sunday, 08 November 2026. It is listed as a trading holiday, but the exchanges will hold a special Muhurat Trading session that day. Timings come out by circular closer to the date.

FAQs on share market holidays

How many share market holidays are there in a year in India?

There are usually 14 to 17 weekday market holidays, on top of every Saturday and Sunday. 2026 has 16 for equity and equity derivatives. That count includes a day added for the Maharashtra municipal elections, which was not in the original annual list. The number changes every year because most festival dates follow the lunar calendar.

No. NSE and BSE are closed both days. Two exceptions come up. Muhurat Trading runs on Diwali, which in 2026 falls on Sunday, 08 November. And the exchanges occasionally open for a specific event: both traded on Sunday, 01 February 2026 for the Union Budget. Each one is announced by circular in advance.

No. Settlement holidays are not trading holidays. The market opens and closes at the usual times. What stops is the back end. Clearing banks and depositories are shut, so funds and securities move on the next working day. Four dates are settlement-only in 2026: 19 February, 19 March, 01 April and 26 August. Trade as normal on those days, but expect your money a day later.

No. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq and London Stock Exchange (LSE) trade on their own calendars while Indian markets are shut. If you hold US stocks or overseas-priced commodities, those positions keep moving on Indian holidays while you cannot act on your holdings. GIFT Nifty, the Nifty contract in GIFT City, also trades through most Indian holidays, so the Nifty often opens with a gap after a break.

On Sunday, 08 November 2026, for Diwali Laxmi Pujan. It is a short evening session, for an hour. It marks the start of Samvat 2083 for the trading community, and many investors buy a token quantity rather than trade seriously. NSE, BSE and MCX all take part. Timings are notified by circular, normally in October.

Equity runs a pre-open from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM, continuous trading from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, and a closing session from 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Currency derivatives close at 5:00 PM. Commodities on MCX run to 11:30 PM or 11:55 PM, depending on daylight saving in the reference market.
