Indian stock exchanges will remain closed on two occasions in May 2026, as per the official holiday calendar issued by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
What are the stock market holidays in May 2026?
May 2026 has two confirmed trading holidays for equity markets:
| Date | Day | Holiday | Exchanges |
| 1 May 2026 | Friday | Maharashtra Day | NSE, BSE |
| 28 May 2026 | Thursday | Bakri Eid | NSE, BSE |
Both holidays fall on weekdays. On each date, trading in the cash segment and equity derivatives (F&O) will remain suspended for the full session.
Maharashtra Day holiday: 1 May 2026
Maharashtra Day on 1 May falls on a Friday. Combined with the weekend, this creates a three-day market break, with trading resuming on Monday, 4 May.
Investors with open positions or pending deliveries should note the T+1 settlement cycle. Trades executed on Thursday, 30 April will settle on Friday, 1 May. Because markets remain closed on that date, settlement will move to the next working day. Traders should review open positions before Thursday’s close.
Bakri Eid holiday
Bakri Eid falls on Thursday, 28 May. Markets remain closed for the full session. As 29 May is a Friday, the closure creates a two-day break heading into the weekend, with trading resuming on Monday, 1 June.
Investors should plan for any trades or deliveries scheduled around that period, keeping T+1 settlement obligations in mind.
Commodity market schedule for May 2026
MCX will observe partial closures on both May holidays:
| Date | Holiday | Morning Session | Evening Session |
| 1 May 2026 | Maharashtra Day | Closed | Open |
| 28 May 2026 | Bakri Eid | Closed | Open |
Commodity traders in gold, silver, and crude oil can participate in the evening session on both dates. Morning session trading will not be available.
How many trading holidays has NSE and BSE observed in 2026 so far?
May’s two closures are part of the annual schedule of 15 trading holidays across 2026. Prior closures this year have included Republic Day (26 January), Holi (3 March), Ram Navami (26 March), Mahavir Jayanti (31 March), Good Friday (3 April), and Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti (14 April).
